Daily 5

It was a great first day back to school! It was wonderful to get back together and see everyone again. We have listed our Daily 5, which is a quick recap on some things we did today.

  • We conducted buddy interviews to learn new things about each other.
  • We had a snowball fight (in August!) -Ask your child about this fun activity!
  • after lunch we explored the garden and enjoyed popsicles.
  • In P.E., we played kickball.
  • Then in math we went on a number hunt around the room.

9/1/10

  • In writing, we started to write a short bio about ourselves.
  • We worked on creating a self-portrait to go along with our writing.
  • During math we solved number grid puzzles.
  • We started a Judy Moody chapter book as our first read aloud.
  • At morning meeting we played a guess who game with our interview information.

9/2/10

  • Today we got to go to the library, see Mrs. Clark and take out a library book.
  • It snowed inside our classroom!!! (a game we played to learn more about each other-ask your child about it)
  • We started to share our summer souvenirs or things that represented something we did over the summer.
  • We explored out math reference books.
  • In writing, we worked on a reflection sheet called “Myself As A Learner”.

  • In morning meeting I shared my “Me” Cube and explained how students will have a special week in the spotlight this year.
  • During math we used our calculators solve addition and subtraction puzzles.
  • We sang a great rock song in the afternoon that focused on the three types of rocks.
  • For reading, we reviewed all the great reading strategies used in second grade and tried some during our read aloud today.
  • As writers, we continued to focus on small moments about a person or place.

  • We drew and labeled our predictions about what layers there are in the earth.
  • Then we read a great book titled, How To Dig A Hole To The Other Side Of The Earth to find out the layers.
  • In math we practiced our knowledge on how frames and arrows work focusing on patterns.
  • As writers we learned the difference between “watermelon” stories and “tiny seed” stories.
  • We also began our work as writing buddies and helped each other brainstorm ideas.

9/17/10

  • In spelling, we became word detectives and found misspellings as we practiced a proof-it page in our new journals.
  • In P.E. we played a new version of kickball called fiveball.
  • During math, we demonstrated our knowledge on our unit 1 assessment.
  • Today we had 3 geology experiments. In the first one we had 3 rocks (Tootsie rolls) and applied the Earth’s heat (microwave) and the rocks turned into magma, which when cooled became an igneous rock.
  • After that we had 3 Starbursts to represent shells, animal remains and sand. We used pressure (pushing down with our palms) and it became sedimentary rock. Then we applied the Earth’s heat and pressure (our mouths!!!) to create metamorphic rock. What a tasty experiment!!

week of 20th

We have had a very busy last few days- so this post will include happenings over the past week:

  • As a third grade community we had a composting assembly outside and learned how to compost and all the many things that can be used to do it!
  • We completed our MAP testing in reading and really worked hard to do our best thinking.
  • Our first issues of Time for Kids Magazines came in so we read a lot of cool articles.
  • In geology, we are making a big book version to How to Dig a Whole to the Other Side of the Earth and we have been conducting experiments on our “pet rocks”.
  • One morning we shucked a LOT of corn on the playground before school even started!

10/20/10

  • We worked in groups to plan our geology posters.
  • Today was our second time to the book fair.
  • In math, we are continuing our work with partial sums.
  • During writer’s workshop we worked with our writing buddies on paragraphing.
  • For part of reading time we listened to a great story called “King of the Frogs.”

11/22/10

  • We read a funny book called Plump and Perky Turkey. After, we pretended we were turkeys and wrote persuasive letters to Farmer Wentworth to try to save ourselves from being Thanksgiving dinner!
  • As we begin our geography unit, we have started to learn about landforms and are focusing on mountains.
  • In math a new game was introduced called Division Arrays.
  • Our new read aloud booked called Stories from Wayside School is hilarious.
  • We continued to practice reading our published stories and are excited to share them tomorrow!

1/12/11

  • In the computer lab we created silly stories by using Wacky Web Tales. This activity reinforced the knowledge of parts of speech.
  • We started to organize our country research notes and write our first paragraphs,
  • In writer’s workshop, we continue to write personal narratives and will be ready to publish another one soon.
  • Math has been filled with learning about decimals and place value.
  • We started our author study on Roald Dahl and have recently finished two books, The Enormous Crocodile and The Twits.

1/26/11

  • We read a great book about the Solar System and then had a chance to watch a video about the planets. We even learned a new planets song!
  • We finished our discussion about the India article in our TIme For Kids magazine.
  • In spelling, we took an achievement assessment to see how we are using our spelling strategies.
  • During math time we worked on creating angles in geometry.
  • The Roald Dahl book, George’s Marvelous Medicine is almost finished and we laughed a lot at the end of the day about George’s adventures.

REMINDER: Tomorrow we will be going to the Southworth Planetarium to the the show, EIghts Planets and Counting!

1/31/11

  • We partnered up to paint the planets for our classroom bulletin board.
  • Now we are learning about each of them and becoming “planet experts”.
  • In math, we demonstrated our learning of triangles and quadrangles.
  • We finished George’s Marvelous Medicine and discussed some common themes we have seen in three Roald Dahl books we have read so far.
  • During writing time we have been working to revise another piece of writing to be published into our anthologies.

2/8/11

  • In computer we researched facts about our Moon.
  • During writing time we have begun to develop our story ideas for fiction.
  • We painted our solar system planets.
  • Then we continued to research our planets.
  • We created 3D shapes for our geometry unit in math.

 

2/11/11

  • We watched a short video clip to learn more about the phases of the moon.
  • Our solar system planets have been hung up in the room-they look great!
  • We worked on our classmates’ compliments for our collages.
  • Also in math, it was exciting to get into our second math journals and start unit 7 on multiplication.
  • In the morning we got together with our “Mystery Class” buddies and solved for each mystery spot photoperiod (amount of daylight). We have started to make some predictions on where some mystery classes might be in the world.
